OPERA
TOSCA
Art direction and design
The opera Tosca was presented at the Teatro del Bicentenario Roberto Plasencia Saldaña in Leon and also in the Teatro Juarez in Guanajuato City.
This production is set in Mussolini’s Italy. The main character is Floria Tosca, a pious woman in love with the artist Mario Cavaradossi. Tosca discovers her dark side when her love is challenged. The concept is a woman facing the dark with a knife hidden in her back, the candle reflects her spirituality, in the background, the bars are both a church and a jail.
It was a very interesting project and my job ranged from creating a concept, directing the photo shoot to designing all kinds of promotional materials. I enjoyed every bit of it. Growing up, opera wasn’t available in my city; unfamiliar with it, I had the idea of it being boring, long and snobbish. Nothing far from reality, it is so much drama, passion, and fun. That’s why I also made a series of illustrations and a drawing book about the heroines of the opera, so younger audiences can be interested in this genre.
