SPECULATIVE
DESIGN
Class projects that contemplate essential societal issues and create products and services for those scenarios.
VACCINES
My approach is satirical. Imagining a not-distant future where vaccines are available to buy online. There are various aspects that I dive into in the video:
-
The constant desire of parents to have better, more capable, and more successful children, especially compared to others.
-
The lucrative business that the health system represents where access to health is determined by the availability and amount of economic resources.
-
The ways we store data, precisely the health information, the ownership of that data, and the power of owning that information.
CONCEPT
Probable Future. Vaccines will be easier to administer, finding painless and effortless ways to apply, store, transport, and distribute them. Rich countries will continue investing in developing new and better vaccines. The poorer countries will be subject to the availability and limited resources that their economies impose.
Preferred Future: I want to understand health as a human right, separated from economy and power. To have access to good health services, appropriate, on time, and affordable regardless of the country of residence. New technologies and vaccines should be part of this system. Pharmaceutical companies and health insurance companies should be strictly regulated. Vaccines would be a fundamental part of such a system. Equal access to vaccines would make a difference in eradicating some, if not all, pernicious illnesses associated with poverty.
Possible Futures: In this Future, the affluent, more developed countries expand their territory to other planets in the solar system, increasing the gap between nations and their economic resources.
Two aspects are the difference between nations: education and health. Health services are concentrated in developed countries on other planets. Medicines and vaccines are scarce or almost inexistent on earth, with limited inventory and old technology available.
TELETRANSPORTATION
Time and distance and the effect those two factors have in our lives. What would change in our lives if we only could be with our loved ones in a matter of seconds? How would that impact our relationships? How would that influence our quality of life?
